Vashon Film Society Presents “Girl Asleep”

New for this year, the Art Film Series has expanded to two screenings – Thursday evenings and Friday matinees –  to allow cinema fans two chances to see film festival fare right here on Vashon.

girlasleep_final_fullThe world is closing in on Greta Driscoll. On the cusp of turning fifteen she can’t bear to leave her childhood, it contains all the things that give her comfort in this incomprehensible new world. She floats in a bubble of loserdom with her only friend Elliott, until her parents throw her a surprise 15th birthday party and she’s flung into a parallel place; a world that’s weirdly erotic, a little bit violent and thoroughly ludicrous – only there can she find herself. Based on the critically acclaimed production by Windmill Theatre, Girl Asleep is a journey into the absurd, scary and beautiful heart of the teenage mind.

Greentech and Backbone Present “How to Let Go of the World & Love All the Things Climate Can’t Change”

htlg_jpeg_for_websiteThe Backbone Campaign brings “How to Let Go of the World & Love All the Things Climate Can’t Change” to Vashon Theatre, Tuesday, October 11th, 5:30 PM.

In the face of dire scientific predictions about climate change, this documentary asks, “What is it that climate change can’t destroy? What is so deep within us that no calamity can take it away?”

Filmmaker Josh Fox (“Gasland” and “Gasland Part II”) concludes that courage, resilience, innovation, democracy and community are among the ideals that must thrive in order for us to weather the coming challenges.

The screening is made possible thanks to support from Vashon Theatre and Island Green Tech. Admission is by donation, with all proceeds supporting Backbone Campaign’s Solutionary Rail project, a bold proposal to electrify the nation’s railways with renewable energy.
